Merca Bae is a Madrid-based producer and DJ whose music bridges the hardcore continuum—grime, jungle, dubstep—with the rhythmic pulse of Latin America and the Caribbean. Over the past decade, his forward-thinking productions and dynamic DJ sets have earned him international acclaim, leading to tours across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Born Alejandro Silva in Salamanca, Spain, Merca Bae grew up immersed in dancehall, hip hop, reggaeton, salsa, and bachata, while discovering underground club sounds online. After moving to Madrid in 2012, he became a fixture of the city’s underground scene, and by 2016, he launched the Merca Bae project—a concept-driven platform blending anonymity with monthly releases on SoundCloud and Bandcamp.
His breakthrough came with the “Merca Zip” series, a free-to-download archive that defined his style—dubbed “neo-Latin grime” by Noisey—and cemented his reputation as one of the most innovative voices in experimental club music. Performances at Sónar, Berghain, Cakeshop, Mutek, Floyd Miami, and The White Hotel, along with appearances on Rinse FM and NTS, expanded his global reach. His debut EP Místico (2018) solidified his status within the electronic avant-garde.
Since 2019, Merca Bae has also served as musical director for Bad Gyal while collaborating with artists such as Isabella Lovestory, Nathy Peluso, and Six Sex. His productions—spanning underground anthems like “Morder,” “Bubbaloo,” and “Volteo”—balance cutting-edge experimentation with mass appeal.
In recent years, he has continued to expand his vision: debuting his immersive live show 2048 at Sónar 2023, releasing his second EP Amuleto on Club Romántico, and contributing a bold salsa-jungle fusion to Nathy Peluso’s Club Grasa remix project. A lifelong salsa collector and devotee, the genre remains central to his artistic identity, grounding his futuristic club experiments in deep rhythmic tradition—an influence that also led him, alongside Bclip, to form the salsa ensemble La Magnifíca Internacional.
Maintaining a creative tension between his underground roots and mainstream collaborations, Merca Bae has recently released the latest edition of Merca Zip (2025), delivered a remix of Shygirl’s “Flex,” and launched La Mercateka—his residency at Barcelona’s iconic Razzmatazz club.
Looking ahead, he is laying the groundwork for two of his biggest projects to date, signaling the next chapter in his ever-evolving sound.
